Szczodre Gody. Slavic Christmas
OBJEKT Gallery, Warsaw
2024
OBJEKT Gallery was celebrating Christmas slavicly
“Szczodre Gody” is a holiday that comes from Slavic tradition. It was celebrated during the winter solstice, when the night became shorter and the day longer. It opened the new solar year and for Slavs it was a moment of symbolic victory of light over darkness. It brought hope and joy. It was celebrated at the table, telling fortunes from straws of hay hidden under dishes and the tablecloth, exchanging gifts, singing carols and decorating diducha - the first harvested sheaf of rye placed in the corner of the room, stored there until spring.
The Christmas installation OBJEKT reaches to the essence and the primal sources of the Christmas ritual. It is filled with shine, reflections, raw, natural matter: porcelain, wood, wicker, wool, but also the generosity of the tender touch of a person who carves, weaves, animates the object with their own breath and all emotions.
